The Dangerous Curves: Plus Size Belly Dance Convention is making a difference in body acceptance through the performing arts, which is the first belly dance event of its kind. The convention’s first year made changes in the lives of many, while adding one more positive step in the body acceptance movement. The first Dangerous Curves Convention was held in Detroit, MI on July 11 and 12, 2014 and was organized by myself and Adina Gamal.

The sub title, “Plus Size Belly Dance Convention,” is a call out to all those dancers in the plus size community. Being plus size myself–who has gone through many adversities because of my plus size status–I felt the need to speak up as a woman and as a plus size belly dancer. My outcry is this…”You’re Beautiful as you are”  and “Yes you can.” The first statement means love yourself as you are. Even if you want to make a change, do it for you. The second statement means that just because you are plus size, curvy or whatever you may be labeled as, don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something…because you can!

At Dangerous Curves you will find instructors and performers of all sizes, plus vendors all carry clothing for your body type. Dangerous Curves has become a safe haven for the plus size dancer, for the curvy dancer, for the any-size dancer.  The 2015 event will be bigger and better with an all new Dance Competition, Full Fashion Show and the first ever Dangerous Curves Red Carpet event! And so much more.

This Convention is about us sharing in our Beauty, sharing our stories, our curves. A convention of this kind is needed to show the world that beauty comes in all sizes and so does ability as well as skill. Due to the Directors living in two different states, and having different visions, there will now be two different conventions. The more conventions like this, the better to spread the word. One will be based in Maryland and one in Michigan.

The new Dangerous Curves: Body Acceptance Convention will be held in Maryland and is about us sharing in our beauty, sharing our stories, our curves, we are making a differences in many new ways, the convention will have a full fashion show, dance competition, a red carpet event, and the DC & BA Club, which anyone can join and share in the understanding of body acceptance. Editor’s Note: This article was edited to reflect that the two main organizers, Adina and Yasaman, have parted ways. In order to be fair to both organizers, I would like to mention that the event organized by Adina is called the “2nd Annual Dangerous Curves Plus Size Belly Dancer Convention” and will be held June 12-13, 2015 in the Detroit area.
